UP barking 600m of hoarding artworks
Made Up Collective delivered the UpBarking Hoarding Artworks project by facilitating a year-long Design Studio for young people aged 16–25 in Barking. The programme offered free creative sessions in photography and screen-printing, supporting participants to develop their skills while creating artwork that would inspire designs visible across the town.
Through these workshops, young people generated designs that were added into over 500 metres of hoarding artworks installed across six local regeneration sites. Made Up Collective managed the full process, from running the workshops and developing the designs to overseeing the dibond fabrication and installation of the final pieces.
Across the project we connected with more than 200 participants and 10 community groups, celebrating the creativity of local residents through exhibitions at BLC Gallery, market stalls, 200 metres of window installations and a public event in collaboration with Barking Bathhouse.
The artworks were designed using smaller modular panels that travelled across each hoarding site. This approach reduced fabrication costs while ensuring the pieces could be reused as standalone artworks once the hoardings were no longer needed, creating a lasting creative legacy for the community.
