Pallet Pavilion

The Barking Pallet Pavilion was a self initiated community-focused architecture and design event held in Barking, East London. The project centred on the construction of a temporary pavilion built from reclaimed wooden pallets, demonstrating how low-cost recycled materials can be used to create an imaginative, functional public space.

The pavilion was designed to look like a deck of a ship, assembled through a collaborative process involving APEs Adventure Playground Engineers, students, and local participants. As well as showcasing sustainable construction methods, the structure provided a venue for a summer of public activities, all shown weekly on the sail of the ship, from an outdoor cinema, music events, planting, community feasts, junk jams, parkour, youth yoga, art sessions and dance workshops all encouraging spontaneous social interaction and community engagement within Barking’s ongoing urban regeneration.
